Barcode scanning
Barcodes can be used to automate parts of the return process by using a barcode scanner. There are multiple use-cases where you might want to use this within your return workflow.
Scanning barcodes in Returnless
You can use a barcode scanner in two ways within the Returnless panel:
- Scan tracking numbers on shipping labels to open the return.
- Scan product barcodes (EAN) to mark them as received.
Shipping label barcodes
By scanning a shipping label's barcode, Returnless will automatically open the associated return in the return panel.
Please note this feature works on all pages in the return panel, as long as the browser tab is active. If you install the Returnless Chrome Extension, you will be able to scan a barcode at any moment, even if the Returnless panel is not active.
Testing your barcode scanner
Barcode scanner test page
To test out your barcode scanner, click the following link.

On this page by pressing the Start listening button you can test your scanner against the displayed code and see whether the input matches the scanner. You'll also be able to see a speed measurement of the scanner.
Contains Enter Key failure
It can happen that your barcode scanner does not have an Enter key set up. If you are using a Zebra barcode scanner, you can follow this guide by Zebra to set up the Enter key for the scanner.
Manually validating shipping label barcodes
You can test a barcode manually by using the following URL.
https://panel.returnless.com/barcode-lookup?barcode=BARCODE
Using this url and replacing BARCODE with a shipment barcode will redirect you to the return related to this shipment.
Compatible barcode scanners
Returnless only works with so-called 'HID' scanners. HID stands for Human Input Device, which means they behave like a keyboard.
We have a lot of experience with the Zebra DS2278. This is a wireless scanner that you can use up to several dozen metres from your computer. It also has an easy base station that charges the scanner. This scanner works perfectly on both Mac and Windows with Returnless.
Of course, you can also use any other HID scanner with Returnless.
Returnless Chrome Extension
Returnless has developed a Chrome Extension that lets you use scan shipping label barcodes without needing to have a Returnless tab active.

Download and add the Chrome extension to your browser here.
Problems with scanning
If problems arise with scanning a barcode, it could be related to a language setting in the barcode scanner. To resolve this issue, scan the barcode below to set the barcode to the necessary language setting.
